Hey everyone,
As you may have heard, Substack recently announced that they have begun allowing writers to add new sections to their newsletters. These are the links seen in the red box in the image above.
Note: This is not the same thing as Substack’s recommended link sections, which can be seen on the right hand side of your newsletter’s homepage.
Substack sections are essentially sub newsletters that are operated under your central Substack.
So for example, I’ve added four additional newsletter sections to Blogging Guide (seen in red box above): Medium News, Digital Marketing Lab, Canva Guide, and Exclusive Website Content.
These newsletters will all show up in my news feed (under the “new” tab) or in their own respective pages (click on each to see those pages).
While Substack has given writers the option to auto-subscribe all our existing contacts into these new newsletters, I know how real newsletter fatigue is, and I didn’t want to upset any of my readers.
All this to say—If you want access to these sections or additional newsletters, you must manually subscribe/opt in to them. It won’t cost you anything extra to enroll in them.
Below is a brief description of the current additional newsletters that I have planned and how to sign up for them.
As you will see these are all topics related to the core elements of Blogging Guide (Medium writing, digital marketing, graphic design).
The difference is that by subscribing to these additional newsletters, you can receive targeted content that is useful to you, specifically.
For example, the first new “section” or “Newsletter” is called Medium News. This will contain very succinct, but timely announcements of new Medium platform and product features as they are announced by Medium or as I discover them (possibly ahead of Medium’s announcement of them).
While this content may be generally applicable to many of my subscribers, there are plenty of Blogging Guide subscribers who are not Medium writers, so sending out these messages to everyone (through the main newsletter) might be simpler for me, but it would result in a poor user experience for readers.
Similarly, even if you write on Medium, you may not care about what’s new on the platform in terms of features, and you may only value articles that typically appear on Blogging Guide, about new higher level blogging strategies. And that’s totally fine too!
The great thing about having all of these subnewsletters is that YOU can choose whether you want to receive any additional email newsletters. And if you subscribe to one, but don’t end up liking it, you can simply opt out of that one section, while still receiving the core Blogging Guide newsletter.
This is a new feature from Substack, so the use case may change over time, but this is how I plan to use this feature for now (content segmentation).
New Optional Newsletters (you must opt into these newsletters)
These may change over time, but initially I’m offering four additional newsletter sections:
1. Medium News
As mentioned above, these emails will be very brief (1-2) paragraphs announcing new Medium platform features, company news, and useful third party articles covering the platform and its role in the digital publishing landscape.
Anticipated Frequency: Anywhere from 2-3 times per week to 1-2 times per month
2. Digital Marketing Lab
I write a number of blog posts on Medium under Digital Marketing Lab. This email will help you stay in the loop, with a quick one sentence link to my latest articles.
Anticipated Frequency: Once per week (at most)
3. Canva Guide
Canva Guide will contain the latest Canva-specific tutorials that I create. I may also add in some free bonus templates, depending upon the interest.
Anticipated Frequency: 1-3 times per week (at most)
4. Exclusive Website Content
While I share much of my content through this Substack newsletter, and a series of Medium publications, I also publish high value blogging content exclusively on my own website, www.bloggingguide.com. This newsletter will contain periodic links to this content that you otherwise might miss.
Anticipated Frequency: 1-3 times per week (at most)
How to Sign Up for Additional Newsletters
Step 1.
Click on the Menu arrow in the upper right hand corner of your Substack account.
Step 2.
Click on the “My Account” button.
Step 3.
Select the newsletters (in addition to Blogging Guide) that you wish to receive, by checking the box next to the newsletter names.
As noted above, you will NOT be automatically subscribed to any of these additional newsletters as a Blogging Guide subscriber. You will need to affirmatively opt-in to each and can also selectively opt out of each, without removing your core Blogging Guide subscription.
