I think this is great for publications to communicate with subscribers but I'd never, EVER give up my standalone email list. It's mine, I own it. As with all content on Medium, it could disappear one day if the platform disappeared.
Completely agree. But it might be a nice way to experiment with a secondary list or just to drive further traffic, or make announcements that fall short of your personal newsletter's content quality threshold.
The really noteworthy thing about this change is Medium giving up even an inch to writers. This either means there is massive financial trouble (which I don't think is the case) or that they see this move as part of a necessary step to compete with or destroy other rival platforms (like Substack).

Good points. I'd probably use it for a publication that has no affiliation outside of medium. I may actually try it for my pen name accounts.

I'm with you on this Kristi. It's the reason I moved off of Medium recently. I also like the ability to integrate a blog post and and podcast
Which makes total sense as a podcaster.
I've only done one, but it was fun!
